I’m not feeling particularly enthusiastic about snow potential in the East with the weekend system but it will be beneficial for Texas. California and it’s drought continues to be pounded but some respite is on the way next week as ridging returns. That ridging marks the beginning of a colder pattern from the Plains to East Coast.

The arctic reservoir is locked up in far northern Canada and over the Arctic itself right now but as heights rise northward, so the door is opened up next week. I’m confident that another arctic air mass will cover a large swath of the country between Dec 25-Jan 1. Look at the turnaround in height anomalies between 3 and 216 hrs in the GFS charts below.

10m winds at 168 hrs show a cross polar flow.

As for snow cover.

GFS through the next 7 days

ECMWF somewhat more bullish.

Even more so by day 10!
