The US drought map has been updated (20th rather than 13th) and it continues to show the two main areas where drought is extreme at this time. I think it’s safe to say that by the time we reach the end of June or July, that drought in Northwest Texas, western Oklahoma SHOULD be less.
The reason is this…

A LOT of wet weather coming to the very areas that need it. As stated plenty already, California will not get relief until Fall when those El Nino-like system come acalling but even here, things should improve further west by the end of this year I think.
Here’s a latest look at the CFSv2 precipitation through June. Notice it’s showing well below normal rains in South and East Texas but more importantly, there’s plenty of moisture coming for much of the country which is good to see.

Notice the VERY WET conditions seen over Florida. The reason I highlight that is because, look at what the GFS is hinting at towards the end of week 1 of June.

Of course this is fantasy land this far out but very interesting how the GFS has this while the CFSv2 suggests a very wet June, hum!
Here’s July Precipitation

Notice how the area of dry grows from Southeast Texas, Louisiana into Mississippi, Arkansas and west Tenn. It shows wet in N Florida but dry in southeast as well as up into Georgia and the western Carolinas. Plenty of moisture again for the Rockies.
The overall moisture shifts away from the Southeast and more over the Rockies between June and July and I think that WESTWARD trend continues as the El Nino develops down in the equatorial Pacific. Good for California and the arid west. Drought appears likely to shift from the Panhandle down into South and East Texas as well as the Mid-South. Notice in the below temperatures off the model it shows well above normal temps.
