Friday Evening Thoughts On Europe

Written by on April 4, 2014 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

This pattern may appear boring or monotonous these days but as an actual fact it’s rather typical of this time of year. Remember how abnormally cold it was this time last year and the year before, the flood gates had now opened following a record warm, dry March.

Through the course of this weekend, Europe’s height field returns to normal with a mean low repositioning to the south of Iceland while the high will be bobbing between Spain and France. The UK will be in the battle ground. Sunday’s sees the approach of a low which means wetter, windier conditions and this unsettled weather spreads into N France, the Low Countries and Denmark.

Through the early part of next week, we see a front push through and this is followed by sun and showers and a chilly air flow while it heats up under strong sunshine down across Iberia into the western Med. If your heading south for a pre-Easter break, next week looks pretty good, especially after all the rain they’ve seen down there.

The below ECMWF 500mb/surface charts through this weekend and next week show the return of the trough and cooler conditions following Sunday’s system but we appear to get some warmth and ridging mid week and possibly late week too.

The NAO continues to trend positive next week which would support an Atlantic trough/Europe ridge with the potential for that ridge reaching the UK.

I had intended on posting about the QPF, solar flux stuff in relation to this past winter and next winter but haven’t managed it. Will try sometime Sunday or Monday.

The CFSv2 has the trough out over the Atlantic west of Ireland and the ridge between Spain and Germany, classic of a positive NAO and battle for the UK.
