Much colder air now resides across eastern and central Europe with some of this bleeding west into the Low Countries and the UK in modified fashion. Highs in Moscow and Kiev are struggling to get much above -17 and -10C respectively while overnight lows are diving below -20C and while seasonably bitter in the north, the SE countries of Bulgaria and Romania are digging out from TWO major winter storms in just 4 days. Check out the above image from today which shows the deep snows covering the streets of Bucharest.
According to the GFS, here’s the 00 hrs snow cover across Europe. Note the deeper stuff in the Southeast and Alps as well as up across Scandinavia and into Russia. Most of Northern France, Low Countries and the UK remain bare and so any winds blowing in from Europe will be cold but the air temperature is considerably less cold.

Not one but two major winter storms have battered Bulgaria and Romania in the last 4 days and the latest storm is now taking aim at the Ukraine. This region is use to seeing heavy snow and cold winds and up till just 2-3 weeks ago, winter was practically non-existent.
Check out this image from a couple of days ago of houses being dug out from smothering drifts caused by howling icy winds. This region has been hit hard again.

While the UK has been largely snowless this winter so far, surprisingly the Scottish ski resorts are doing excellent. Upwards of 3 metres, yes 3 metres of snow is being reported at Glencoe Resort where crews worked hard to dig out chair lifts following the latest round of heavy snow. Yes, there’s enough cold air at 2-3,000ft to support heavy snow in the moisture rich Atlantic flow these days.

So, live in the UK and want snow, now you know where to head…
In saying that, we still could see lower elevation snow over the next 24 hours as colder air pushes in from Denmark and Norway.
Here’s Europe temperature tomorrow morning. Very cold in the east where snow is deep and widespread, chilly in central areas where it’s thinner. Yes, many parts of the UK drop to freezing or below tonight. Watch out for ice in the morning.

Looking largely dry and bright with some precip confined to the south of the UK. Note the low approaching from the west. That’s our next trouble maker.
Take a look at Friday, here we go again. This is the trouble when we don’t get that NAO negative and it hasn’t been ALL winter!

Unfortunately for mainland Europe, unless you don’t like the cold and snow, that low is a game changer with warmer air returning to western and central areas including the Alps.
850 temps by 72 hrs go back above freezing over areas feeling the chill now.

That low is now seen dropping south over Ireland next week which could have warmer outcome than earlier thought, but it will depend on exact track and how much cold it has with it.

Another low arrives next Wednesday. Again, we should watch how much cold air these things have on arrival from the US.
