Southern California Record Heat

downtown_los_angeles_skyline_california_usa_photo_wikiAfter a bout of heavy rain, wind and heavy mountain snow at the start of last week, the pattern flips around once again across Southern California. Today through Saturday, it’s all about the warming Santa Ana winds and record warmth.

Downtown Los Angeles is currently 84 degrees with several surrounding communities way up in record-breaking mid-80 degree territory and still climbing. As well as high pressure, strong ENE winds funnelling through the coastal mountains from desert to coast are responsible for raising today’s readings region-wide into the 80s. A few spots including Anaheim and Santa Ana may approach 90 degrees today or tomorrow with points nearer the coast, eg. Fullerton, Long Beach, which could even reach the low to mid-90s! Quite often, it’s locales nearest the coast which see the warmest temperatures during Santa Anas.

Winds blow from high to low pressure and it is the work of Southern California’s geography which helps temperatures rise to midsummer levels during any time of the year. Winds cross and funnel through the mountains and as they do they dry out and compress. The drying and compressing, forces the air to heat and by the time these winds have pushed through and over top of the coastal range, they have warmed the air into the 80s all the way to the coast.

Enjoy this warmth as a cool down comes Sunday with low to mid-70s. By midweek, it’s back to the 60s with an onshore flow and the return to unsettled conditions.

Stay tuned as I will have a post later tonight on the cold prospects across the South and Florida with even a slight chance of seeing rare snow flurries. Also will be looking at the significant snowstorm threat for the East Coast mid next week..
