Scotland
It’s been a beautiful but chilly day across the majority of Scotland and plenty of blue skies, although in the shade it remained cold with frost lingering, highs have only risen to between 2-5C today, wintry showers have affected the north and east. With the cold base temperature, now that the sun has dropped, so too is the temperature, we’re in for a widespread frost. As of this writing temperatures are already returning to freezing with frost and ice reforming quickly. Expect to wake up Thursday morning to the coldest start yet. I expect even towns and cities to dip to between -2 and -4C with rural areas diving to between -4 to -8C (if winds remain light). Freezing fog is also likely to form tonight so take care whilst out and about.
Thursday will be much like today with a cold start followed by a cold but, at least sunny and bright day. Temperatures will have a tough time recovering to positive territory reaching 1 or 2C at best with sheltered areas holding at around freezing but anything above freezing will only last for an hour or two. The majority of tomorrow will remain at or below freezing with frost and ice lingering throughout the day. Each day from now till the weekend will struggle to hit freezing and every night may be colder than the previous, so expect frost to become sharper. I expect nights to push -10C towards this weekend in the Highland Glens.
Where freezing fog forms tonight, it may linger in sheltered areas throughout tomorrow and therefore temperatures may hold at -1, perhaps even -2C all day.
England
Over 100 flood warnings remain in effect across England (& Wales) and with some rivers yet to peak as water runs off surrounding hills, we still need to pay attention even though the weather is turning much drier. While it turns drier, it doesn’t mean showers won’t still be around. Showers out over the Irish Sea may spread into parts of the southwest while showers continue to feed into and down the eastern side of England from off the North Sea. As temperatures fall away tonight, be aware that these showers affecting areas anywhere from Northumberland to Kent may pose an ice risk as well as they may fall as sleet or snow and not just to high ground as the depth of cold in our atmosphere grows. Over the hills of the North York Moors and the Pennines, a light dusting is possible as these showers may penetrate inland.
While eastern areas remain cloudier tonight, it will turn cold with a risk of ice, towns and cities will dip to 3 or 4C while rural areas may dip nearer to freezing. Areas to the west of the Pennines should be clearer and with lighter winds, expect a widespread frost with lows dipping to near between 1 and -3C from Carlisle to Oxford. A few rural areas may dip to -5, even -6C, particularly in the north.
Tomorrow will be a largely bright day with good spells of winter sunshine, highs will be low at 3-6C but where overnight fog lingers, highs may fail to reach freezing.
Another cold night tomorrow night and Friday will be another day with plenty of sunshine with eastern areas exposed to sleet or snow showers, highs just 2-5C.
Wales
An improving weather picture across Wales though flooding problems aren’t over despite the drier weather as rivers are still rising. You’ll notice the chill now in the air despite the sunshine. Expect highs over the next few days to rise to only 3-5C while under clear skies and light winds at night, lows will dip widely below freezing with some of the coldest spots tucked within the hills may get down to -6C. Mist and freezing fog patches are likely to form and where these linger all day in sheletered parts, don’t expect temperatures to get above freezing.
Northern Ireland
Cold and bright by day, clear and frosty by night pretty much sums it up across Northern Ireland today through tomorrow. Highs are struggling to get much above 3 or 4C for many parts while clear skies and lighter winds will mean a widespread frost with lows dipping to between 0 and -5C.
Ireland
Cold and bright by day, clear and frosty by night pretty muchh sums it up across Ireland today through tomorrow. Highs are struggling to get much above 3 or 4C for many parts while clear skies and lighter winds will mean a widespread frost with lows dipping to between 0 and -5C tonight.
