Sunday morning was not quite as cold as Sat morning for New York City or Boston but it was colder across the interior Northeast and Mid-Atlantic with mid teens for DC, whilst Saturday morning it was only down to 21 there.
Saturday’s highs were also impressively cold with most locales barely getting to 20 and windchills running from single digits to low teens all day. Thanks to the fresh snow covered ground and the arrival of fresh Arctic air on the backside of the snowstorm, it got to around zero to 13 below in areas of PA and VA Sunday morning making it the coldest morning of winter so far.
The coldest air found in the East Sunday morning appears to be locations that recieved substantial snow from the storm as well as northwest Pennsylvania, northwest Virginia into eastern West Virginia, a swath of central New York and northern New England. Any Arctic air mass will cool the key cold spots of the Northeast of course so places such as Berlin, NH or Saranac Lake, NY is no surprise for subzero lows. Those as well as other locations are expected to get below zero. According to Jesse’s post, Bradford, PA hit -13F while Shenandoah Airport, Virginia the temp dropped to -11F. Portions of Kentucky appeared to also ride close to zero also.
Across Center County, Pennsylvania which is home to State College and AccuWeather’s Global Headquarters it got cold like everywhere else from the Ohio Valley to East Coast, Jesse posted on his blog what the readings yesterday morning got down to at some of the meteorologists houses where they have their own thermometers.
Elliot Abrams: 8
Airport: 6
Henry Margusity: 6
PSU Walker Building: 6
Joe Bastardi: 5
Bellefonte (Zed-X): 5
Lemont: 3.4
Bellefonte (KPABELLE3): 1.5
Bellefonte (C8478): 1
AccuWeather HQ: 1
Jesse’s House: 1
Hawk Run: 0
Thanks to a fresh blast of Arctic air that was sucked in between the departing eastbound snow and ice storm it got cold. Jesse stated to me via Facebook there wasn’t really any wind and that allowed them to cool off to around the zero mark for the first time this season. Interestingly, although there was 6-12 inches of fresh snowpack to their south and snow to their north, there was bare ground in State College which has missed out on the snowstorms so far this season.
Thanks for reading.
