>THE RIVER CLYDE WHERE IT RUNS THROUGH GLASGOW CITY CENTER IS SHOWING ICE FORMATION NOW.

BUILDINGS AND INDUSTRIES ACROSS THE CITY SEND OFF VIGOROUS STEAM FROM CHIMNEYS AND VENTS INTO THE COLD ATMOSPHERE ABOVE GLASGOW NOT NORMALLY SEEN BECAUSE IT’S NORMALLY NOT COLD ENOUGH.

Ok, -9C is still chilly but what I was hearing from folks in Sanquhar in Dumfries and Galloway would make our reading seem mild. A guy I spoke with in the newsagents that I deliver to said that his car thermometer read -13C between 5-6am whilst a lady who walked into the shop said that when she was up at the nearby settlement of Crawfordjohn which is higher elevated within than Sanquhar but only a mere 7-10 miles apart, her car thermometer there read -19C! Though there is some inaccuracies with car thermometers, their not all that out, perhaps by a degree or two. That -19C IS plausible and actual readings up there may have dropped into the -16 to -19 range given the feeling of the air I breathed in whilst jumping out from the truck in Sanquhar..

Amazingly last night the town of Woodford within the Greater Manchester area reached a reading that hit -18C or 0F Wednesday night whilst Manchester’s official reading hit -13C or 9 degrees, quite remarkable for sure and beats the current coldest spot in England for the season which was Topcliffe, Yorkshire.

Benson, Oxfordshire also reached the frigid levels of Woodford. Benson is a well known cold spot in the south-central part of England and with lotsof recent snowfall and the arrival of clear, calm Arctic high pressure firmly in control this isn’t all that surprising.

The coldest night however is likely tonight and with -15C already being reported at the cold outpost of Altnaharra, Sutherland, it is concievable we see the first -20C low of the season. I do believe a low of -22C or lower is possible over the next two to three nights under perfect conditions.

Currently it’s 15 degrees here at the house and we do have a chance of reaching the lowest levels of the 09-10 winter if only clouds and fog can stay away…

Thanks for reading.
