This has been a disappointing summer for many, particularly for western and northern parts of the British Isles and Ireland. However, from a meteorological standpoint, it’s been fascinating, quite extreme and probably has been one of the weirdest and most extreme that I can remember.
We started with the UK’s hottest July reading of 36.7C at Heathrow, remember? Since then we’ve witnessed record cold nights and days and for folks in more southern parts of England and Wales, this morning may well have been the coldest temperature ever recorded in July. So we started hottest and possibly end coldest for some…
Last week saw lows take a southerly track and therefore our air filtered down from the arctic. However this week sees a position change that turns our temperature opposite of last week in SOUTHERN parts of the UK. For us, up here in Scotland and back across Ireland, we’ve been left out, pretty much always stuck beneath low pressure and that will be the case as we end this week and commence next week.

We shall remember predominantly cool, wet and windy but ahead of the fronts in the sunnier South and east of England, southwest winds will push air temps to the mid-20s Sunday and the high 20s Monday before the front sweeps in bringing a cooler and more unsettled middle part of next week. Once again, this is a short lived burst of summer, confined to the southern UK.

Looking ahead and unfortunately I see no real change through mid August.

CFSv2 is going for a cool and wet August, I agree with this.
