The current Mid-Atlantic snow event marks the return to a colder pattern for the Eastern US and Canada and the GFS ensemble is more impressive with the depth of trough in it’s 7-day means beyond the opening 7 day period.

We’re watching closely a second major system that will cross the Northern tier next week. While it will be cold after today’s system, it’s after next week’s where the model has the really cold air as an arctic high dives in. Highs in the 20s are likely from Minneapolis, Chicago to NYC and Philly once the system passes. That’s significant for late March.

Check out the GFS surface charts.
