Due to the relentless bitter cold, ice cover on the Great Lakes is yet again and amazingly for a 2nd straight year approaching 90%. Just last year, March saw a 92% max which surpassed 1994 and was the highest ice cover since the winter of 1978-79.

The current 88.8% cover is still ahead of last year at this time.

Not sure if there’s been two straight winter’s where ice coverage approached the all-time record set in 1979 of 94.7%.
