GFS Takes NYC, Philly Back Into Single Digits

Written by on January 18, 2015 in United States of America, Winter 2014/15 with 1 Comment

Your well aware by now that I expect the cold to come back as we head towards month’s end. Thought I would take a look at the GFS meteogram day 9-15. Saw some things which caught my eye.

Notice how the model takes NYC back to 9 on the morning of Feb 2. This would tie the low here for the winter.

Along with spending a few days in the 20s, the model also takes Philly into single digits.

However, the model doesn’t seem to see arctic-Siberian depth cold further west.

Here’s Chicago for the same period. Min only goes to 18.

Even Minneapolis. Min only goes to -5.

The trough is pretty much always in the East hence the at or below normal temps but note the different in 850 temps/anomalies between week 1 and 2.

I love the new JMA for February with it’s -AO/NAO pattern. Now that’s a cold pattern for the eastern US!

Lokkin’ interesting. Don’t think I’ve seen one anywhere near this winter pattern as yet… Do we get mud season? More variations on 2013/14 with the couple o’ wimp outs late? Super hot spring/summer? Much cooler than normal spring summer with a few warm ups? Kind a’ wacky.
