TUES 11 DEC: UK & IRELAND REGIONAL FORECAST

Scotland

For many inland parts, the temperature failed to crack the freezing mark today following the coldest night of the season for the Central Lowlands. While the coldest place overnight was Tulloch Bridge where the low hit -10.5C, Glasgow Airport fell to -8C, Edinburgh -6C. Many places outwith towns and cities fell to between -7 and -9C last night.

Temperature for many are already back down at -5 or -6C as of 6pm and although the cooling process slows following a rapid fall at sunset, lows are likely to go to similar values if not even a little lower this last night. I wouldn’t be surprised to see rural parts of the Central Lowlands dip to -10C tonight with towns and cities falling to between -5/-7C. Highland villages such as Tulloch Bridge, Aviemore, Dalwhinnie, Braemar and Aboyne all could push -13C tonight under clear skies, light winds and with the help of snowcover.

A weak system advancing ne from Northern Ireland will push cloud into the Southwest tonight and this will raise temperatures here, eventually reaching Glasgow. Don’t be surprised to see a few flurries during tomorrow morning.

Wednesday will be less sunny than today with more cloud but it’s likely to be a sun/cloud mix. Snow showers may dust the Southern Uplands with flurries possible for the Glasgow-Edinburgh corridor.

Another cold day to come with few reaching freezing. Where fog forms tonight, highs tomorrow may struggle to get above -2 or -3C in sheltered areas.

England

Few saw a high above 2C today unless you were on the immediate coast. If you were in the Midlands, you had an ugly cold day with daylong freezing fog and a temperature stuck below freezing. Tonight will be a cold one everywhere and dense freezing fog will become a hazard across large swaths of the country. The Midlands will remain fogbound and even down towards Greater London, fog is already forming fast. This will cause a problem not only on roads tonight but for air travel. Expect delays at Heathrow and Gatwick, perhaps Stansted and Southend Airport as well as the Midland Airports too.

Where skies remain clear, towns and cities will fall to between -2 and -5C, in rural parts, expect -5 to -9C. Benson may hit -10C, making it the coldest night in England so far this season.

Expect a foggy and cold day for many and even those who see sunshine, highs will struggle to get much above freezing, in fact much of the day, like today, will stay below freezing wqith just a couple of hours reaching into positive territory.

Wales

After a cold day with highs struggling to hit freezing, tonight will be another very cold one with a widespread hard frost. Inland, sheltered parts may push -8C tonight in Powys while most rural areas dip to between -4 and -6C. Coastal communities may hold at 0C, towns and cities -1 to -4C.

A bright, sunny day Wednesday with patchy freezing fog lingering, highs again will struggle to between -1 and 0C near the English border and where fog lingers to around 5C nearer the coast.

Northern Ireland

A cold day with highs of between 0 and 5C will give way to another cold night with lows falling to -6, maybe -7C in parts but through the later part of the night, cloud will increase and eventually rain, sleet and perhaps high-elevation snow will push in from the southwest during the morning Wednesday. Highs may be slightly warmer than today at between 3-6C.

Ireland

A milder push of air will advance across Ireland through tonight bringing a rise in temperature and an increase in rain and patchy drizzle. An early dip to near freezing or just below for most will give way to a much milder but cloudy and damp start to Wednesday with temperatures by 9am up at 5-7C for most. Through the afternoon it remains cloudy with showers here and there, these may join to become more persistent, highs rise to a milder 8, perhaps 9C during Wednesday afternoon.
