Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg See Warmest March Day On Record, UK’s Warmest Since ’68

It was the perfect setup for an historic March day. An unusually strong anticyclone sandwiched between two cut off lows. The tight pressure gradient and orientation between the low off Morocco and high over the western Med drove a powerful southerly wind which transported hot west Saharan air north over Europe.

A maximum temperature of 24.5C recorded at Kew Gardens, London yesterday was the UK’s warmest March day since a high of 25.6C was recorded at Mepal, Cambridgeshire back in 1968.

Meanwhile the warmest air arrived in France, Low Countries and Germany today.

With a national average temperature of 24.1C, today’s was France’s warmest March day on record. Over 200 stations setting a new all-time March heat record. The warmest in France today was a summer-like 29.8C.

Paris-Montsouris reached 26.0C which surpassed the French capital’s previous March heat record of 25.7C recorded back in 1955. The city’s main climate station also observed 3 consecutive days at 25C or above. A record.

The Netherlands set a new national March heat record today with Arcen reaching 26.1C. This surpasses the country’s previous record of 25.6C set back in 1968.

Belgium set a new national March heat record with Koersel topping 26.8C. This surpasses the previous Belgian record of 26.8C set in 1968.

In Germany, a temperature of 27.2C was reached at Rheinau-Memprechtshofan setting a new national March heat record and surpassing the previous record of 26.8C set back in 1989.

Luxembourg also recorded their warmest March day with 23.5C reached at the airport, surpassing the previous record set in 1968 by 1.3C.

While not a national record, Badajoz in Spain reached 32.3C setting a new monthly record for the city. In Florence, Italy, a high of 28C set a new monthly record here and surpassing it’s 1955 record by 2C.
