North American pattern looking likely to turn from mild to cold in time for Christmas…

It may be a mild pattern now across a large portion of the continent but the models are seeing the return to a colder, snowier pattern east of the Rockies as we approach Christmas. In fact much of the continent goes from red to blue within the next 2 weeks.

Notice in the GFS ensemble how the ridge lifts from Minnesota to off the West Coast and another positive can be seen over Arctic Canada with the return of the eastern trough underneath.

Note the stark flip from a warm to cold continent within just 2 weeks.

Two factors could be responsible to this large scale flip. 1) The Indian Ocean thunderstorms which drove heat through the troposphere into the stratosphere (Joe Bastardi)…

2) the shut down of these thunderstorms which alters the areas of rising and sinking air from Pacific to Atlantic.
