The UK has been separated by two quite different air masses over the past 24 hours. Wednesday began with -7C in Aviemore but +13C in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and really through the day it didn’t change much with the south peaking at around 13-14C whereas northern Scotland struggled to get above freezing all day. In fact Aviemore’s maximum today was -2.4C.

Over the next 24 hours as a deepening low approaches the UK, so southerly winds ahead of that system will reintroduce double digits temps to all during Thursday.
However, as that low comes ashore near Mallaig early Friday, peaking as it does so, we shall see widespread gales, possibly severe gales for a time in central lowlands/highlands. Gusts of 60-70, locally 80 to 90 mph on exposed coasts and over hills.
