Reaching the roof of Glen Coe: Bidean nam Bain & Stob Coire Sgreamhach

Written by on July 20, 2018 in Scottish Mountains with 0 Comments

My last hill walking visit to Glen Coe was back in June 2017 to take on the infamous Aonach Eagach ridge. Thankfully this time it wasn’t quite as challenging or hair raising but nevertheless, my next target in this stunning area was Glen Coe’s highest peaks. Tucked in and looming behind the iconic three sisters lies Bidean nam Bain and Stob Coire Sgreamhach.

Day/date: Sunday 1 July, 2018

Munros: Bidean nam Bain, Stob Coire Sgreamhach

Start point: Car Park, Glen Coe

Drive length: 2 hours

Walk length: 7 miles

Weather: Mostly sunny 22C at bottom, patchy cloud, 12C on summits

The starting point for these two couldn’t be more special in the heart of Scotland’s most photographed glens.

When leaving the car and heading down into Glen Coe, you look up and see between the three sisters the 3,657 ft munro top of Stob Coire nan Lochan which is easily mistaken for one of the munros.

Both Bidean nam Bain and Stob Coire Sgreamhach lie further back and can be seen from the road but only at certain angles.

Heading down into the glen before rising. Looking back at the Aonach Eagach.

Out of view from the busy A82 lies the River Coe.

Starting the ascent but the views greatly soften the relentless slog up.

Heading into Coire nan Lochan.

Ben Nevis now comes into view over top of the Aonach Eagach.

Nice view looking across the upper end of the Lost Valley to Stob Coire Sgreamhach.

Still a fair bit to go to reach the ‘munro top’.

Nice close up over the Aonach Eagach, Mamores to Ben Nevis.

Am Bodach

Long way down!

The summit of Bidean nam Bain finally comes into view.

I finally make it to the munro top of Stob Coire nan Lochan, elevation of 3,657 ft and the views are stunning to say the least.

Looking east with Buachaille Etive Mòr to the left.

Looking west across to Loch Leven and the Ballachulish bridge.

Still not there yet but it’s getting closer…

Wouldn’t fancy a slip here.

Clouds rolling in from the west.

Yaasss! I finally make it to the summit of 3,776 ft of Bidean nam Bain.

Yep I was sweaty!

Nice view of Ben Starav just to the south.

Ben Lui to the distant right.

Now leaving Bidean nam Bain and starting the ridge across to Stob Coire Sgreamhach.

For my second time, I stand in July snow!

Looking down the Lost Valley.

Making the final ascent to the summit of Stob Coire Sgreamhach.

My 2nd summit is reached… 3,516 ft Stob Coire Sgreamhach.

Looking back across to Bidean nam Bain.

Looking down at my path back through the Lost Valley.
