There’s nothing unusual about thunderstorms and the heavy, sometimes flooding rains that they deliver. However, the thunderstorms which sweep the area stretching between Richmond and Fredericksburg, VA between Thursday and Saturday was anything but typical.
The intensity of the rain was about as extreme as it gets for any part of the US late last week thanks to abnormally juicy air and a stalled frontal system.
In between the 3-day rain event, Friday observed 7.61 inches which had for Richmond’s 2nd wettest 24-hour period on record but it was the amount of rain which fell within an hour, 30 minutes, 15 minutes and even 5 minutes which was remarkable.
New table: Phenomenal rains hit Richmond, Va. Friday, its 2nd wettest day on record. 4"+ in one hour. 2"+ in 15 minutes. Some of these intensities have just a 0.01 percent (1 in a thousand) chance of happening: https://t.co/GNWXip3cLH (Graphic via @SERCC) pic.twitter.com/AZROLGzc6k
