Have We Just Had The 2nd Strongest -NAO since 1948?

The British Isles turns cold following a sudden stratospheric warming some 66% percent of the time. The mid February warming of course led to the record breaking ‘beast from the east’ last week.

When Europe turns cold a week to 10 days following an SSWE, the NAO is often very negative along with the AO.

According to Etienne Kapikian (@EKMeteo) on twitter, the -NAO we just had was the strongest for any month except January 2010 since 1948.

His below tweet states that for March 1-2, 2018 is strongest daily indexes for any month except 1948 but absolute record goes to January 2010.

He also states that the previous records for the February-March periods go to 10 March 1951 and 2 February 1963.

So, the first SSW since 2013 brought a record -NAO and in turn a record breaking spell of winter which will be etched in our memories for many years to come.
