The Savoie region of France witnessed 1.8 metres of snowfall (6 FEET) within 36 hours. A once-in-30 year event says forecasters. In the Simplon region of Valais, where Zermatt is located, an astonishing 2 metres (6.6 feet) of snow fell in a 24-hour period, the Swiss ATS news agency said.
