UK diurnal swing returns! First rural frosts arrives 2 days after warmest day since June

We’re ending a rollercoaster temperature week and beginning of meteorological autumn on a cool, crisp note.

The first half of the week saw a rising trend in temperature ahead of an approaching Atlantic front with peak heating Wednesday followed by a sharp downward trend in the wake of the front. We peaked at 29C in Kent Wednesday PM but interestingly Kent witnessed the UK’s coolest daytime maximum 24 hours later.

A cool high has built in following the latest low. Thanks to lower sun angle and lengthening nights under clear, calm conditions, we’re seeing the return of the diurnal swing. Clear, calm, dry air warms nicely by day but tends to cool quickly after dark and tonight, like last night will be chilly and likely the UK’s coolest since spring.

Back in mid August, Northern Ireland’s frost hollow Katesbridge dipped to 0.5C which was coldest since early June. Tonight could see the first -0C.

Unfortunately the weekend remains split between decent Saturday followed by wetter Sunday, more so in the west and may remain dry, bright and warm in the east.

With the exceptions of near 30C heat, next week looks strikingly similar to the current week ending. We unfortunately appear stuck beneath an Atlantic front queuing pattern thanks to the resistance of a strong Scandinavian block but this doesn’t hold and stop the Atlantic winning over the UK.
