Searing Italy, Soggy UK… Atlantic jet stream gives and is ready to take away!

For seemingly an eternity, a stubborn upper low has brought distinctly non-summer-like weather to Ireland and the UK with fronts providing spells of persistent rain, gusty winds coupled with a sunshine and shower regime either side. While the UK remains poor and cool, it’s blazing hot in southern Europe… It’s all down to the jet stream and amplified/blocky configuration.

The highly amplified jet stream over the last week with an important northward bulge (ridge) over the North Atlantic has been responsible for bringing the crummy weather here because what goes up must come down and when you’ve a big ridge to your west, your likely stuck beneath the trough…

However the jet stream is beginning to strengthen near Newfoundland and the downstream configuration is ready to change from amplified to zonal. This initially digs the trough further south over France and northern Iberia as well as east and so fronts also penetrate further south and east thus marking the beginning of the end to the extreme heatwave searing southern Europe.

As we progress through mid week we see the UK low shift east into Europe and replaced with an Atlantic ridge which topples in but doesn’t stop. The ridge will essentially act like a wave breaking on a beach or a train which doesn’t stop at a station as it is southern Europe bound thanks to a zonal jet stream. While one pesky front clears southeast England, the next Atlantic front moves into northwest Scotland. The ridge influence merely lasts 24 hours. In saying that, it’s not all doom and gloom as this leaves us back in a north-south split for the UK by the upcoming weekend and much more typical conditions over the continent.
