Tropical Storm Franklin is set to make landfall overnight tonight on the southern end of Mexico’s Yucatan. Currently winds sustained at 60 mph but this system could approach hurricane status prior to landfall and if so would be the 2017 season’s first for the Atlantic.

Strong west-east upper ridging over the Gulf means this is heading nearly straight west and no US issue.

This visible satellite from 4 hours ago suggests that Franklin may already be approaching hurricane status with an eye beginning to appear.

The Yucatan’s busy tourist coastline shall already be prepped for this.

Franklin shall weaken over land before likely re-strengthens out over the Bay of Campeche and should make a second Mexico landfall early next week. This will be a significant rain producer.

Water is nice and warm between Franklin and the Yucatan and even warmer in the Bay of Campeche where it’s likely to re-enter water!
