Northeast contends with record cold, strong Nor’easter followed by record heat within 7 days

Yesterday was record cold by early June standards across the Northeast. Beneath laden skies, the thermometer failed to get out of the 50s as far south as New Jersey and 40s in parts of New England. Amazingly by the time we reach the end of the weekend, many sites will have recorded 90s with records likely falling.

Back on June 4th, we had one very impressive temperature gradient over the Mid-Atlantic. 80s vs 50s within 100 or so miles.

Between yesterday’s chill and the upcoming weekend’s blast of summer heat, the coastal Northeast and a Nor’easter to contend with and latest runs of the GFS indicate a stronger, in-close to the coastal system with sizable impacts from rain, wind and possibly even coastal flooding.

10m winds ramp up as the low deepens on departure. Gusts could reach 60 mph on the coast and hurricane-force just offshore.

Once the low lifts out, heights build fast along with a strengthening SSW flow which rapidly brings summer back up the East Coast this weekend.
