Record May snow/cold in Alaska, Miami sets new May, nearly ties all-time record with 98F

What an incredible display and variety of extreme weather on all corners of North America these days.

While it snowed in Newfoundland, Alaska likely experienced it’s coldest late May system on record with temperatures of -37F at 17,000ft and an all-time record May snow in Barrow, all the while Sunday was one of Miami’s hottest days ever, never mind hottest in May.

On Thursday, Barrow recorded 4.2 inches of snow which was the most recorded between May 20 and July 4. The following morning, the snow total was up at 5.6 inches which made it the city’s biggest May snow within 24 hours on record.

Richardson Highway through Thompson Pass.

At 8am Friday, Fairbanks was reported light snow and 36F. Only the 5th times the city has reported snow on May 26.

Hottest May day on record for Miami

This was Miami’s hottest day since June 2009 and tied for 2nd hottest ever temperature.
