Beijing, China ended April on a blistering, record breaking note. It’s now starting May with a choking dust storm which has caused pollution levels to go through the roof, forcing many millions to seek shelter indoors.

Visible satellite imagery shows the cloud of dust blown in over the city and northern China in the wake of a cold front which wiped out the summer-like heat.

The dust cloud was kicked up by a storm over Mongolia and reduced visibility to 0.62 miles within Beijing. 48 flights were cancelled at Beijing International Airport.
