Back in March 2012, Scotland enjoyed not only the warmest weather in the UK but it’s warmest March temperatures since records began. That year saw northeast Scotland rise above 21C not once but 3 consecutive days with a peak of 23.6C at Aboyne. March 2012 was also Scotland’s warmest on record and the UK’s 3rd warmest.
Another fact regarding March 2012. While the 23.6C was Scotland’s warmest March day on record, it was not the UK’s. The March heat record of 25.6C set back in 1968 at Mepal, Cambridgeshire remains.
March 2017 was no repeat of 2012 as this time it was England’s turn for the toasty early spring sunshine. Despite 20C recorded at Aviemore last weekend, the Southeastern UK enjoyed the warmest temperature this March of 22.1C recorded at Gravesend yesterday while Scotland was predominantly cool, wet and breezy.
This weekend is a tail of two halves with Saturday being cool and showery but much drier, brighter and therefore milder Sunday as a trough gives way to a ridge.
Into next week (Monday, Tuesday) and low pressure nearest N Scotland will promote cooler, breezier and at times wetter conditions across the North but the bulk of the UK enjoys HP and drier, brighter, milder weather as a result.
Mid to late week sees the return of dominant high pressure directly over the UK which shall promote clearer skies and larger diurnal swing with cool, potentially frosty nights while days turn out pleasantly mild.
The common denominator to this pattern appears to be the dominance of high pressure and therefore drier than normal conditions, perhaps extending well into April.
CFSv2 precip anomaly through the first half of April is dry.
In terms of planting the seeds to a particular summer pattern, April plays a crucial role and a dry April could be good news for warm weather lovers later down the road… Summer forecast comes out May 1 BTW! Will have thoughts on summer in the coming days…
