Drought To Deluge: Atmospheric River Continues To Hose California In Relentless Storm Series

First it was Northern California which got the constant hammering in January, then it was Southern California’s turn late last week and now the Atmospheric River has repositioned back into Northern California.

The Friday storm which is said to have been SoCal’s strongest since December 2010 brought 108 mph gusts to the Grapevine along with heavy flooding rain and heavy mountain snow. While Downtown LA’s 2.05 inches wasn’t in record territory, surrounding hillside communities made up for that.

New rain records

First time in 5 years, Downtown LA goes above normal for rain.

These we’re the incredible scenes witnessed back on Friday as LA and SoCal endured their biggest storm in nearly 6 years.

The next powerful system with long trailing cold front extending back beyond Hawaii is set to push into the Bay Area tonight bringing another batch of powerful, likely destructive winds along with additional flooding rains and heavy mountain snows.

The long fetch of moisture streaming thousands of miles back into the tropical Pacific always suggests a major rainstorm and on already saturated ground with major rivers near flood stage, this has the potential to be disastrous.

This is a dangerous situation for most of Northern California’s rivers.
