After ‘years’ of poor rainy seasons and worsening drought, 2017 has started like a dream for California, if not a little too much too quick.
While low elevations over parts of Northern/Central California has seen up to a foot of rain, the mountains have been just buried!
Wind is always a significant factor in powerful California winter storms. Back at the beginning of this week, a wind gust of 175 mph was recorded over the summit of Alpine Meadows while Squaw Valley had a gust of 173 mph.
The powerful winds sadly brought down the famous Pioneer Cabin Tree, a drive through giant sequoia which was carved out back in the 1800s.
With day after day of heavy, wind driven heavy snow and white out conditions, 1-80 at Donner Summit has seen off and on closures as plows have had a tough job keeping this major cross Sierra artery open.
This was the scene from Kirkwood Ski Resort where huge snowfalls are typical here when Northern California receives a generous rainy season. This is one of those years!
In all, 1-2ft, yes FEET of rain has fallen while that 1-2ft of liquid above 6,000 or so feet has translated to between 10-16ft of snow.
Mammoth Mountain appears to have received the great one week total and here is the result!
