After ‘years’ of poor rainy seasons and worsening drought, 2017 has started like a dream for California, if not a little too much too quick.

While low elevations over parts of Northern/Central California has seen up to a foot of rain, the mountains have been just buried!

Wind is always a significant factor in powerful California winter storms. Back at the beginning of this week, a wind gust of 175 mph was recorded over the summit of Alpine Meadows while Squaw Valley had a gust of 173 mph.

The powerful winds sadly brought down the famous Pioneer Cabin Tree, a drive through giant sequoia which was carved out back in the 1800s.

With day after day of heavy, wind driven heavy snow and white out conditions, 1-80 at Donner Summit has seen off and on closures as plows have had a tough job keeping this major cross Sierra artery open.

This was the scene from Kirkwood Ski Resort where huge snowfalls are typical here when Northern California receives a generous rainy season. This is one of those years!

In all, 1-2ft, yes FEET of rain has fallen while that 1-2ft of liquid above 6,000 or so feet has translated to between 10-16ft of snow.

This is significantly helped the drought situation, particularly for Northern California.

This pattern ain’t over as zonal Pacific jet looks to intensify and take direct aim at CA.
