Promising Winter Pattern Shaping Up For Europe Beyond New Year

The models remain consistent at bringing the return of a -NAO just after the turn of the new year with a major ridge setting up west of Ireland while arctic air pours into Europe from the east.

As well as favouring colder times, snow chances are also on the increase.

The arctic door reopens for the UK bang on New Years Day according to the current run of the GFS with snow levels likely falling through the day.

Through next week, it looks fairly quiet but likely feeling January-like with NW flow into UK but towards next weekend, we have another reinforcing shot of arctic air which may deliver a 2nd ‘significant snow’ opportunity. (KEEP IN MIND THIS IS ONE RUN OF ONE MODEL AND FINER DETAILS WILL CHANGE…)

The GFS ENS just at the turn of the new year shows a ridge right where you’d want it, opposite of now.

The model suggests the N Atlantic/S Greenland/Iceland ridge holds while the UK trough deepens through next week with more -AO signal showing into week 2. A classic North America-Europe cold pattern.
