PHOTOS: Subtropical Flow Presents 17C For Scotland While Ukraine & SE Digs Out!

Written by on November 14, 2016 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland, Winter 2016/17 with 0 Comments

We’ve reached mid November and we have a classic autumnal rollercoaster of weather this week. With a jet stream to the north and stiff southwesterly, the UK is starting off the week downright warm while on the opposite end of the continent, Ukraine and Southeast Europe is digging out.

The below GFS 850mb temp chart shows the warm southwest flow feeding mid-Atlantic warmth up over Ireland and UK while low pressure spinning north of the Black Sea is driving Siberian air into southeast Europe.

It shall remain mild through Tuesday but the big change and downright trend in temperature comes mid week as a potent cold front sweeps through. Polar-maritime air follows this cold front.

With a steep pressure gradient, westerly winds increase through late Wednesday and Thursday with snow levels over the Northern UK falling. Low pressure ESE of Iceland will help feed Greenland air into the UK-bound flow and so expect Thursday’s highs to hold at just 4 or 5C with nights falling to around freezing or below.

By late week, that low near Iceland sweeps SE and we see heights rise over the UK so we loose the wind but hold onto the cold air and so expect drier brighter weather this weekend but cold, frosty nights.

BURIED: Balkans To Ukraine

This beast produced not only heavy snow but strong winds which led to blizzard conditions and a lot of blowing and drifting this past weekend over Southeast Europe.
