OMEGA BLOCKING PATTERN PROTECTS WESTERN EUROPE FROM ENERGETIC ATLANTIC

Written by on September 19, 2016 in Rest of Europe, Summer 2016, United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

We have an omega blocking pattern developing this week. With low pressure over the Atlantic and south/southeast Europe and high pressure centred over Scandinavia extending SSW, the majority of the British Isles is largely cloud, wind and rain free. The exception being Scotland and Northern Ireland where we’re always closest to the Atlantic lows. The Atlantic jet is strengthening with a series of developing and strengthening lows on board, the high over Europe will largely deflect these wind and rain bearing systems from sweeping across.

Late week into the weekend will see more Atlantic influence as the continental high weakens slightly to allow more influence of low pressure. Expect a wet, windy Fri-Sat, possibly Sunday period but again it’s confined mostly to Northern Ireland and Scotland with much of England and Wales high and dry with warm sun.

This setup also continues to favour a warmer than normal pattern with winds continuing to blow from the south.
