HURRICANE HERMINE RAPIDLY STRENGTHENS PRIOR TO FLORIDA’S 1ST LANDFALL SINCE 2005!

Written by on September 2, 2016 in Summer 2016, Tropical, United States of America with 0 Comments

Today marks the first day of meteorological fall 2016. Many millions from St Louis to Atlantic City will remember this summer as a long hot and uncomfortably sticky one. For those in the South, it’s been soggy too.

Unfortunately for the non heat lover, it looks like it’s going to remain on the warm humid side for the next few weeks, helped by the warm water up the EC.

Of course all the attention right now is on the tropics. We now have Hurricane Hermine and it continues to strengthen on approach to Florida’s Big Bend.

The last few hours has seen significant improvement on satellite and infrared imagery with storm structure now looking mature with sharp cooling of cloud tops surrounding the eye, indicative of a solid ring of hot towers embedded within the eyewall.

This situation is a twofold problem as it’s not just a Florida or even Southeast but the entire East Coast is under the gun with strong to potentially damaging wind, flooding rain, storm surge etc.

Once Hermine re emerges out over the Atlantic, the water is abnormally warm, could it return to hurricane status?

Coastal flooding from rain and storm surge could be very significant all the way to Long Island.

Once Hermine makes landfall as a hurricane in Florida it tracks NNE up the coast but the problem is that high pressure builds strong to the north, halting it’s progression out. This will make prolonged stormy weather for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast and a beach battering from constant wind and wave action.

Tornadoes are also a threat.
