Hurricane Earl Makes Landfall Nr Belize City, Only 4th Landfall Since 1980

Earl made landfall early this morning (Thursday) as a Category 1 hurricane near Belize City causing wind damage and flooding from rain and storm surge.

Interestingly, Earl is only the 3rd August hurricane landfall in Belize history. The last time? 1918 and the only one prior was way back in 1864. So this landfall in this part of the world is surprisingly rare.

Earl quickly weakened once onshore and continues to do so over the rough topography of Central America. Rainfall is the primary concern as orographic influence is likely to increase rain totals forcing flash flooding and mudslides.
