In this morning’s video I showed how the heat crosses the Rockies into the Plains presenting the first widespread upper 90s and low 100s from Minot to Wichita. Further south the wet ground sure does take the sting out of the heat for Texas.
With a trough pushing into the West this weekend on into next week, you’d expect to see the ridge and heat advance east into the Ohio Valley and East Coast. However as you can see from the below GFS 2m temp anomalies, there is resistance with further waves of cool, dry air holding the trough in place over the Northeast. Therefore we hold a twin trough with ridge in between type pattern next 10 days or so. Notice by mid to late next week how the plains heat weakens and the cool wins out in the East.
Stormy day in New York City, check out this great capture from earlier.
Expect not only cool but also wet conditions from time to time beneath the West and East Coast troughs. As you can see from the feature image top, it’s a rainy June day in the Big Apple.
GFS ensemble 5-day mean 500mb height anom.
The CFSv2 weeklies show similar right the way through till the start to July. I guess you could say this is a somewhat boring pattern and things can and do change.
See today’s video. No written post tomorrow…
