I only briefly touched on the severe weather that’s been causing havoc on the Plains in recent days as I’ve been focusing more on the larger, longer term pattern. Not that I don’t care!
Speaking of severe weather, in Atkinson, Nebraska, hail accumulation was deep enough for cars to get stuck yesterday!!
As that troublesome and sadly, deadly Plains system continues to press eastward. With the continued clash of autumnal cool and summer warmth, the severe threat continues once again.
By late week, a rain bearing frontal system will slow and break the long dry spell over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast of late.
This wetter theme looks to continue next week up the East Coast as a secondary system dives into the Plains.

Here’s a look at the GFS 500mb height anomaly snap shots through the next 10 days below. We’ve a big, cold trough swinging through the Great Lakes and Northeast this upcoming weekend and a secondary drops into the Central US in it’s wake, hence why the wet pattern into next week for the EC. Notice that the GFS weakens this secondary trough as it heads east while the ridge builds up the East Coast.
I think we’ve the first blast of real summer heat coming after this likely last gasp of winter!
I shouldn’t be still showing you snow forecast charts but here we go over the next 10 days.
See this morning’s video.
