In this morning’s video I showed the ECMWF solution and I want to show you a more enthusiastic GFS in the written post for the Friday snow.
As expected, the high and cold digging out of Quebec in forcing the storm system coming out of the Ohio Valley to track further south. With plenty of cold air and thicknesses well below 540, we should get a good snow band through parts of IL, IN, OH but it looks likely to weaken as the energy hits the Appalachians.
As you can see from the below AccuWeather graphic, there’s hand off to a secondary development.
This looks better than recent runs off the GFS.

That secondary coastal low looks to really wind up, likely producing gales along the coast all the while the 540, 534 line remains south of Richmond, Va.
This could be a 3-6 incher for the DC to NYC corridor. A little more tricky up to Boston but I can see where we get blizzard conditions on the Cape, perhaps even Long Is as the low feeds back and tightens.
A cold night follows in the wake.
In tomorrow’s written post I’ll look at the setup during next week with the high potential for a major severe weather outbreak.
Check out the projected highs off the GFS by next Thursday. With a strong southerly flow running up the east side of the mountains, low 70s isn’t out of the question as far north as Boston!
See today’s video.
