Strong Wind, Heavy Snow Hits Spain, Colder Signal Looms In 6-10 Day Period!

Written by on February 27, 2016 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland, Winter 2015/16 with 0 Comments

As expected, a blocking high situated across the Northern UK has deflected Atlantic energy south and a deep Atlantic low is producing strong wind, low level rain and heavy snow across much of interior Spain. This low is dragging arctic air with it and as a result, today will probably be the coldest of winter for Southwest Europe.

Interior towns and cities will probably feel at or below freezing throughout today while even on the Costas, you’ll want a jacket as air temp will only be 8-12C, factor in a stiff wind and it feels more like 4-8C.

Only the far northern flank of this sprawling low is affecting the UK with a cold east wind which is likely touching gale-force through the Channel. For the majority of the UK, high pressure is keeping it dry, largely settled with lot’s of winter sunshine across Scotland/N England but more cloud for England and Wales.

As you can see from the above charts, while arctic air dives into the Southwest, it’s a very different story in Southeast Europe thanks to southerly winds blowing up from Africa. Temps range between 10-15C above normal, especially on the northern Black Sea coast.

Through this weekend, that low slides east over the Mediterranean while high pressure holds ground over the UK.

Hard frost again tonight over Scotland where skies are clear, winds light and where there’s snow cover.

Into Monday and a front will push into western Scotland. This heralds the return of a more unsettled pattern through next week.

This feature will not only bring in wind and rain but also milder air.

This is quickly followed by another system mid week with some snow with it.

By the end of next week into the weekend, a positive rebuilds into Iceland and this is sure to drive arctic air back into the UK and West Europe.

There’s a stronger cold signal in the 6-10 day.

Likely in response to what is the strongest surge of stratospheric warming of the entire season.
