With a chilly but settled end to February, it looks as though meteorological winter’s final month will end up slightly below normal temperature wise.

The ECMWF shows a nice blocky, chilly look next 5 days for UK and Western Europe.

Interesting but not surprising, the blocking looks to hold day 5-10. Looking good for a continuation of the largely dry, bright but chilly conditions, give or take a few fronts pushing or trying to push in. The high in the means will remain dominant both west and north which means our mean air flow will be either northerly or east, northeast.

The weekend may be quiet and largely dry throughout the UK, albeit, blustery across southern England, however, it’s quite a different weekend coming up for France and particularly Spain and Portugal. As these intense systems cross Iberia, they will drive rich moisture north on their eastern side into the southern slopes of the Alps. Here, expect some very big snow totals over the next several days.

Blocking high pressure will keep things settled over Northwest/Northern Europe but this in turn forces the Atlantic storm track south where it will be very wet, windy and snowy Saturday-Sunday. The developing depression pushing SE over the Bay of Biscay will also pull in arctic air and this could lead to significant snowfall over the central plateau of Iberia.

Some snow showers driven in on a stiff easterly, may affect eastern Britain but on the whole it’s dry and bright by day, clear and cold by night.

Heavy snow is expected over Iberia and especially the Pyrenees and southern Alps through the next 5 days.

We could see 4-8 FEET of snow over the next 10 days.

This sure helps our case for a cold March.
