The storm system about to cross the West Coast within the next 36 hours is likely to bring significant snow for the Sierra Nevada, Wasatch all the way to the Upper Midwest followed by potentially the coldest air of winter.
This system will be a big rain and snow producer for California and Southwest.
Here’s the latest GFS surface showing the low coming onshore and deepening.

GFS snow forecast over the next 5 days.
Once the system crosses the Rockies it deepens further into what will become a significant Plains snowstorm/blizzard.
Expect a solid 6-12 inch swathe from Southwest to Great Lakes.
This system is drive warmth northward out ahead while cold air gets dragged in on the backside. Once this thing clears, waves of arctic air dive down with a particularly intense cold air mass seen to come south about 8-10 days from now.
