Below article was written at 5am and scheduled for release at 10am, unfortunately it failed to release. Apologies for delay!

It’s another turbulent week of ups and downs with the next named storm, Barney pushing across the UK today. Heavy rain initially followed by gale to severe gale-force winds. Worst affected areas will be central and southern Ireland as well as central and southern parts of the UK where widespread gusts of 50-60, locally 70 mph is likely.

At the coast, 65-75, locally 80-85mph, especially SW Ireland and Wales and Bristol Channel. This will cause travel disruption to road, rail, air and sea today and through tonight.

As Barney pushes through the North Sea, the core of strongest winds exits Ireland and western England and Wales. Expect 60-70 mph gusts along the exposed, low lying Dutch and Belgian coasts later Wednesday.

Another system moves into Ireland almost immediately following Barney’s departure and once this low pushes through do heights really build to the west out over the Atlantic. This position and orientation of the Atlantic-Greenland high and low near Denmark will send in the first arctic wind of the season. Exactly where snow may fall is difficult to say but daytime maximums of between 3-8C UK-wide combined with an icy, strong northerly wind means snow could fall even to sea level well into England and Wales Fri-Sun.

As you can see, this blast of arctic air will sink deep into Europe with possible snow flakes flying in Paris and Madrid through this weekend. The model has a lot of snow for the Alps, Pyrenees and across Germany and Poland we could see a decent covering.

How much lies is tough to say but I recon some places across Ireland and the UK will receive a surprise light covering sometime between Friday and Sunday.

According to the ECMWF, we quickly loose the arctic connection into early next week so this is basically a long weekend cold blast as the Atlantic returns by Mon-Tue.

EPS control shows like GFS ensemble the blocking holding into day 5-10 so this weekend cold cannot be ruled out, lasting into early next week.
