Turning Winter-Like Over Russia, Scandinavia While October Heat Records Tumble In Canaries, Spain

Quite the contrast between Southwest and Northeast Europe yesterday and today. While it’s beginning to look and feel a whole lot like winter up into Finland and northwest Russia, it’s anything but over parts of Spain and particularly the Canaries where all-time October heat records were established.

According to meteorologist Steph Balls foehn winds as well as heat building on the under side of the trough was the likely contributor to yesterday’s mid summer-like 37.2C and 36.7C at Lanzarote and Fuerteventura Airports respectively. Both we’re new October records.

It wasn’t just the Canary Islands which saw their hottest October day but multiple coastal resort towns on the Spanish mainland too thanks to a terral wind.

Despite being a wet, dreich morning here in Edinburgh, it’s a heck of a lot milder feeling than this time yesterday. 16C vs 6C. All thanks to yesterday northward tracking warm front attached to system No 1 of 2 this week.

Speaking of a warm morning, temps as of 7am were holding the middle 20s over the Balearics and 22-24C along Spain’s north and east coast due to a warm SSW wind blowing off the Sahara on the underside of the trough.

Note in the above satellite view how thunderstorms are firing within the warm sector over central and northern France. This second warm front sweeps into the southern UK later today.

While remaining wet and very windy over northeast Scotland, it clears nicely over much of the UK but the drier, brighter only gets replaced by the next rain band pushing up from France later today.

Low pressure approaching NW France is bringing outbreaks of rain over N France and the UK. While unseasonably warm over Spain and the western Med, a winter-like trough will continue to sink southwards from the Baltic Sea through late week into the weekend as a new Scandinavian high develops. This will potentially shield us here in the UK from the worst of the wind and rain associated with Joaquin’s remnant low. Timing is everything though.

While it turns settled but cold over northern and eastern Europe, the south of Europe and Mediterranean turns increasingly unsettled. Interestingly, the UK looks to see two highs meet overhead as we head into the weekend, the initial Azores high looks to initially settle things down bringing the return of pleasant days and increasingly frosty nights but this appears to merge with the westward expanding Scandinavian high and all dependant upon how fast and strong it retrogrades west, depends on how much influence Joaquin has on the UK.

Here’s the latest GFS surface through the next week.
