Flooding rains as well as fire and rising temperatures are grabbing the US weather headlines. The Western US is experiencing some extreme conditions with devastating wild fires raging over parts of California, sadly destroying over 500 homes and claiming their first victim, meanwhile further east and a flash flood claims 8 lives along the Utah-Arizona border.

As of only 4.50am PT, with 0.71 inches of rain, Los Angeles has recorded it’s wettest day of the entire year today.
Here’s the current view overlooking a not so visible Downtown LA this morning.

On the other side of the country, Florida has been deluged by heavy, flooding rains of late thanks to a moisture rich ESE flow around the large high dominating the Eastern Seaboard.

As we’ve seen countless times already this summer and even early fall, a cool, refreshing Canadian origin high has dove SE bringing a pleasant air mass but it’s as it drops into the Ohio Valley and off the Carolina coast, that the heat and humidity pump gets going once again.
We’ll see temps rise back to mid summer levels mid to late week from the Midwest to East Coast as winds veer SW’erly once again.
Today
GFS surface shows the high sinking southeastwards while further west we see two main areas of precipitation, 1) Socal and 2) up through the Four Corners in association with Linda’s left over moisture. A trough is makes it cool down the West Coast as well as draws sub-tropical moisture north.
It’s looking and feeling more like summer for this week’s New York fashion week.
Warmer than normal conditions are likely to persist from the Plains to Northeast through the rest of September.
