The heat has been relentless and often unbearable throughout the Middle East. Temperatures are surpassed 120 degrees across the majority of Iraq with AccuWeather claiming that Baghdad has tied it’s all-time record of 124 degrees (51C) yesterday afternoon.

However, there is worse down along the coast!

Scalding hot, desert air combined with onshore winds blowing off the hottest body of water on earth (Persian Gulf), equates to unbelievable humidity/air temperature combination which drives the heat index (apparent temperature) to intolerable, suffocating levels. Recent days has seen air temperature heat records fall on land but heat indexes along coastal communities have challenged world records too.

The city of Bandar Mahshahr, Iran, positioned near to the shores of the 93-97F Persian Gulf, experienced an air temp of 109F, not that bad on the face of it? Well, factor in an astonishing 90F dew point and the heat index soared to an unearthly 154F Thursday.

However, Friday may well have set a new world record with an air temperature of 115F combined with dew point of 90F. That sent the heat index to an unbelievable 165F.
