Yesterday was about as cold as it gets on a July afternoon. Check out these noon values against the normals from yesterday.

The high only managed an October-like 10C (50F) at Salsburgh in the Scottish Borders yesterday and under cloud and steady rain once again today for Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England, today’s values may not be much better.
At least it’s not 1978 right? Heck we’re not far off that!
Here’s why it’s so cool. Firstly the cold Atlantic but a cold northerly flow feeding into a cloudy, damp front draped over the central swathe of Ireland and the UK has a near perfect setup.
These were the highs across Europe yesterday. You don’t get a bigger contrast than this in July. 10C over Scotland vs 43C in Spain
Yesterday’s anomaly.
Today’s highs according to the BBC and GFS.
The cool northerly flow eases while clouds thin and break during Wednesday. However, with cool air in place along with clearing evening skies, that means another unusually cold July night. Don’t be surprised if you hear of frost and even minus values reported early Thursday morning in the countryside of northern England or Scotland.
GFS surface temps early Thursday AM.
As we depart this work week and head into the weekend, expect something a little more typical. Unfortunately for northern areas of the UK, that won’t mean warmth and sun but a front bringing further spells of rain along with freshening winds. Further south on the other hand, winds turn SSW and we should see a gradual rise closer to average. 21-23C.
Sunday, Monday could see temps push 25C again in the SE but further north, it remains slightly below average though less cold compared to now. Heat builds once again up into the Paris area where we should see low 30s again.
As we enter next week, well it’s looking like another pretty deep Atlantic low swings in bringing further rain and strong winds. As of now, I see no significant heat in the next 15 days.
It’s going to be very interesting to see the stats on July as they come in from the Met Office next week.
See this morning’s video.
