This very unsettled and unseasonable weather for mid-July ain’t going anywhere fast I’m afraid. After a very wet and windy night across Northern Ireland and Scotland with significant flooding in areas, today will be showery with a continued stiff breeze.
We had a terrific lightning display overnight across parts of Southeast and Northwest England as well as southern Scotland.
This was the scene at the Open Championship in St Andrews, Fife this morning. Yep, not pretty but thankfully winds ease and turn westerly through today with skies brightening.
A particularly nasty scene at Alyth, Perthshire this morning!

This system after producing the heavy flooding rains for some, it’s likely to be the winds that’ll be significant later today and especially overnight tonight. The Central Belt could see westerly gusts of 50 mph in exposed areas but it’s a near gale for most central areas tonight as the main low moves east along the Scottish north coast.
As for tomorrow, expect a blustery, showery and autumn-like day in the North while it’s more like July down across much of England and Wales where sunshine will warm most above 20C, closer to 25C in the London/SE area.
Then we’ve more heavy rain pushing up through the Irish Sea later Saturday into Sunday with the next Atlantic system.
Monday into Tuesday sees another and THEN the model appears to give us a bit of a rest from the constant bombardment from a very active Atlantic.
No real change through the rest of July as the trough/ridge remains pretty anchored. This looks to be another colder than normal month for most of the UK with the exceptions of the South and Southeast.
See video for today’s discussion.
