As we progress through this weekend on into next week, the western and eastern ridges link up as well as build northward into the Pacific Northwest, driving temps into the upper 80s and low 90s for both Portland and Seattle.

While it climbs into the upper 90s, low 100s to the east of the Cascades, we’ll also see it heat up again over the Carolinas towards or past 100F after some brief relief this weekend. Over the wet ground of Oklahoma and Texas and though upper heights are plenty strong, surface heating will be restricted due to the amount of evaporation rather than heating the sun’s energy will have to under take.

This 7-day mean 2m temp anomaly chart says it all.

Unfortunately or thankfully, depending on what way you look at it, surface heating over the Southern Plains will be limited to the 90s at best. Probably a good 5-10F cooler than if the ground was dry.

Check out the 5-day mean 500mb heights off the GFS ensemble and how the ridge core moves from Southwest day 0-5 into the coastal Northwest day 5-10.
