Following the coldest Northeast January through March period since 1895, air conditioners will be buzzing throughout the region this week as the first surge of true summer heat pushes in.

Be sure to check out today’s video which takes a quick look back at why the past 2 winters have been so cold and just how historic they were.

Warmth is certainly going to be noticed this week and welcome for many, however there are indications as we head towards the 2nd half of May that cooler weather and a trough may try to make a comeback in the east.

Notice the GFS ensemble has the warm ridge pumping heat into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast with a chance of mid-upper 80s all the way to Boston but there’s a positive up in Alaska.

The saving grace stopping a trough from digging south into the East again is the upper trough expanding over the Western US but will this hold when you’ve heights rising over Alaska and there’s prospects of a recurving West Pacific typhoon?

See today’s video for the discussion. More on the tropical threat either later today or tomorrow morning.
