EUROPE: Cold, Even Snowy Now But Already Keeping An Eye On The Next Warm, Settled Spell

I must say, I was impressed when seeing 3pm reports of air temps stuck at 3C in Glasgow with snow falling in places. This followed a morning low of -2. This air mass is comparable to early February rather than late April and of course just days ago we were basking in sunshine and 18-20C.

This was the scene here in Lennoxtown around 3pm.

Back when it was warm and sunny, I stated to a couple of my neighbours that the hills to our immediate north could have snow on them in a matter of days again. Sure enough…

I must admit that’s it’s not often you see these readings at 2pm on April 27th.

The reason behind this wild swing from warm back to cold.. not uncommon during spring… The NAO has tanked to a place we could only dream of back in winter!

In today’s video I am focusing more on the next potential warm spell and sure enough modelling is pointing towards that towards mid May. Not before a pretty sustained period of cool and wet.

Check out the GFS ensemble 5-day mean 500mb height anomalies. The front running 5 days certainly shows one heck of a trough and some very cold air by late April standards. And air mass that’s supporting very chilly numbers and snowfall to pretty low levels. As previously stated, to get snow at high levels this time of year or even May, is not uncommon but to get snow and especially if it sticks at low levels, well that’s much rarer.

Notice day 5-10 and particularly day 10-15 how the trough slides west back into the Atlantic and positive heights return.

CFSv2 also has the return of ridging and warmth week 3-4.

Nothing written in stone but well worth watching.

See today’s video for the discussion.
