Azores Bubble Bursts And We Turn Colder, More Unsettled Next Week!

Written by on February 15, 2015 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland, Winter 2014/15 with 0 Comments

As stated last week, the Atlantic storm train is ready to get much more active as the cold builds over eastern North America. This cold pool forces a stronger trans-Atlantic jet and with greater thermal gradient comes deeper lows. The problem I’ve had is the Azores ridge strengthens but there does appear to be change.

Week 1 or the upcoming 7 days looks like this off the GFS operational.

Note the positive height field draped from the central Atlantic to the Baltics. This stronger than normal Azores high will ultimately shield much of England, Wales and the near continent from any real ‘weather’ but expect it to turn wetter and windier across Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The first in a series of fronts cross the UK during Monday bringing wetter, windier weather. Behind it, clearer, fresher air and this sets the stage for a cold, frosty night Mon into Tue.

As we pus deeper into the new working week, high pressure really establishes across the south and this largely protects the southern UK from any real wet, windy weather but later in the week and that Azores bubble begins to burst.

Now this is what I want to see…. Change appears to be on the cards for week 2 or the following 7 days. Look at the height field difference across Europe.

Pretty low heights return and this means these deeper lows feeding off a frigid North America can dig more due to the collapse of the southern Europe ridge. That means colder air gets into our pattern and thus a more active and colder week with mountain snowfall likely to make a come back.

Not surprisingly, there’s not a lot of snow to speak of through the upcoming 7 days and check out the following 7.

Snow increase appears over Europe too.
